Doing What We Can

My wife and I never thought we'd get to where we're at right now. So much of what we have is a blessing and good fortune. A lot of what we have though, has come through hard work. Who would've thought that my old job running out of money was going to be a blessing in disguise? Amy and I put our house up for rent, we moved to Boston so that I could go to school while Amy left her very fulfilling and secure job as a teacher, we had Alaina, and both of us came back to jobs in El Paso in a tough economic recession. My family chipped in at home, taking care of contracts, managing our property, and countless other means of support.

Now, my wife has finished another semester in graduate school. She's taken no less than 2 classes a semester, stayed up late, attended study groups, and only she knows when she managed to get any of her actual school work done. She didn't take any time away from her family and despite some tough times and heated arguments, we've made it through another semester. We're doing what we can with what we've got, and she's made me all the prouder for it.

Family First

As the years have passed, I've come to realize that while you benefit from spending lots of time with others, learn from them, and become enriched by their lives, family is constantly providing a sense of comfort, understanding, and help that is not easily attained with those who aren't related to you. I feel blessed to have many great friends, but have quickly realized that my family incessantly puts up with everything I throw at them. Something I'm quite sure not everyone else would put up with.

My 2 brothers and I have taken to meeting once a week (for a few weeks now) for drinks or dinner, or both, just to catch up. I've learned about things going on in my brothers' lives that I may not have otherwise and the whole while, it's been like wearing a great pair of old sneakers. It's comfortable, it's fun, and most importantly, it makes you feel like you can do things better than you sometimes think you can. It's been good.
